Challenge Wanaka takes place in January every year and has quickly become internationally renowned as the world’s most scenic iron distance triathlon, set against the lake and mountain backdrop of Mount Aspiring National Park in New Zealand’s South Island.
Described by athletes as one of the best events on the international circuit, Challenge Wanaka certainly isn’t the biggest but the terrain, remoteness and honesty of the 226km course makes it one of the most memorable. The physical and mental challenges push athletes to their limits but the enthusiasm and warm welcome of the local supporters is second to none with the resulting atmosphere getting even the most tired competitor across the line.
Challenge Wanaka is part of the global TEAMChallenge Series that celebrates the sport of triathlon around the world and more than 15 nationalities take part in Challenge Wanaka. The spectacular surroundings of Lake Wanaka and proximity of many of New Zealand’s most famous destinations provide the ideal opportunity for overseas visitors to combine a holiday with the race.
The two-lap 3.8km swim leg takes place in the crystal clear waters of Lake Wanaka in the sheltered Roy’s Bay. Against the backdrop of Ruby Island and the mountains of Mount Aspiring National Park, the setting is remarkable.
The 180km bike leg encompasses three of the region’s alpine lakes – Wanaka, Dunstan and Hawea. An undulating course, it passes through small rural communities and some of the area’s most spectacular alpine scenery.
The two-lap run leg is unusual for an iron distance triathlon in that 50% of it is off-road. Leaving the lakefront transition it follows the lake edge and heads along the beautiful River Clutha Outlet Track to Albert Town. It then climbs the now infamous Gunn Road hill before heading back into town to Lismore Park, giving a tantalising view of the finish line, right in the heart of the town. In true Challenge style, the lively finish line party welcomes athletes home into the night with thousands of spectators, music and fireworks.
