Halberg Foundation
Creating equal opportunities in sport
At Kia we’re committed to supporting worthy causes in our local community, including the Halberg Foundation.
The Foundation was set up by Olympic champion Sir Murray Halberg (ONZ) in 1963 and aims to enhance the lives of physically disabled New Zealanders through sport and recreation. The work of the Foundation includes a team of Advisers around the country who connect physically disabled people to sport and recreation opportunities. It also provides grants for adaptive sports equipment, lessons and camps and hosts the Halberg Games - a national three-day sports competition for physically disabled young people in Auckland.
Chief Executive Shelley McMeeken says Kia’s support has been instrumental in ensuring the Foundation’s work takes place in communities around New Zealand. "Accessibility is essential to our team delivering their important disability sport work in schools, sports fields, community centres and homes and we are grateful to have Kia as a partner of the Foundation."

Meet RawiriRawiri Tristram from Levin shone at his first ever Halberg Games where he was recognised for his awesome personality and positive attitude. The 10-year-old was born with spina bifida and has been supported with swimming lessons from the Halberg Foundation which helped build his confidence and overcoming a fear of putting his head underwater. Rawiri went on to attend his first Halberg Games in 2017.
